Amalia Perez, LMSW
Psychotherapist
She/her
Amalia Mercedes Perez is a warm, non-judgemental therapist working with children, adolescents, and adults. Amalia understands the delicate moment we might find ourselves in when seeking therapy and therefore prioritizes establishing trust and comfort before all else. With this strong therapeutic connection at the center, she then helps clients navigate and manage depression, anxiety, helplessness, or feeling overwhelmed - by their work, their relationships, their world, or the state of ours.
Amalia earned a Bachelors from Brown University in International Studies and spent her early career in human and civil rights law before finding her true calling as a therapist, and uses this lived experience to further support clients navigating life transitions. She earned a Masters in Social Work from New York University before working as a therapist for adolescents at a public middle school in Bushwick, then for adults at Gouverneur Health and Hospital’s Behavioral Health Center, and later for young kids, teens and adults at the New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center (NYPCC). At Gouverneur, Amalia utilized a psychodynamic approach to help adult clients heal the emotions, experiences and wounds that often lie at the root of their struggles. Later, at the NYPCC, Amalia specialized in Child Centered Play Therapy as well as attachment-based and cognitive behavioral interventions to support children and adolescents ages 3 to 17 overcome anxiety, inattention, trauma, grief, difficulty adjusting or transitioning to change, emotional dysregulation, and suicidal ideation.
With all ages, Amalia is committed to sitting alongside her clients in the dark, scary, and heavy periods of their lives, bearing witness to their pain and helping them (re)connect with a lighter, more empowered version of themselves. Amalia is bilingual and bicultural and offers therapy in both English and Spanish.
